PE
BackOur PE lessons are taught by our excellent PE staff, who use a mixture of the RealPE and Val Sabin schemes to create a PE curriculum that is best suited for our children. Traditionally, PE lessons would focus on a sport primarily, however we take a holistic approach, thinking about the child as a whole. We introduce team elements to develop social skills, have captains and leaders to create leadership qualities and the children are able to be creative with the skills they have learnt, such as creating their own games and dances, developing their creativity.
Every year we participate in Sports week with its on unique theme. In the past we have had sports from different continents, the Football world cup and the Olympics. During these weeks the whole school takes part in challenges as a school, as well as taking on each other in their Houses. We also encourage parent participation at the end with some parent races during Sports Day.
Last year our challenge was the ‘Path to Paris’ where the staff members did a triathlon the distance from school to Paris – Walking from here to Dover (by doing laps around the car park), Rowing across the English Channel (on a rowing machine) and then Cycling from Calais to Paris (on a bike machine).
The Slough School Sports Network
We are proud members of the Slough School Sports Network. Through this partnership we enhance our PE provision by attending training for staff, trips for the children and additional coaches in PE lessons. We have teamed up with the Thames Valley Cavaliers who come in and deliver Basketball sessions to the children throughout the year. The SSSN has also put on training for our Sports and Play leaders to help them plan and run games during break and lunchtimes.
The trips we have been on this year include a SEND swimming gala, Rugby, Cricket, Kurling, Athletics, Panathlon, Gymnastics and Badminton. The events range from participation only to fully competitive events leading on to the Berkshire school games. Last year we had 4 team entrants to the Berkshire school games to represent the school.
In order to further increase our Inter-School competitiveness, we have set up 4 football teams: a boys team for years 3/4 and 5/6 and a girls team for years 3/4 and 5/6. These teams compete in the slough football leagues. We have also taken almost 100 girls to ‘Let Girls Play’ football events this year.
We were awarded with the Gold mark for the school games mark in 2023-24.
Last year we also took part in the very first Slough Dance Festival where schools from all over Slough came together to perform a range of dances (hosted by Create Academy) at The Curve, Slough.
Toothbrushing
The children’s oral health is vitally important to their health as they grow up, therefore we teach the children the importance of brushing their teeth twice a day in addition to looking at the foods and drinks that they consume and the impact it has on their teeth and their bodies. In Reception, the children brush their teeth daily (from January onwards) and continue to do so until the end of Year 1. We have achieved our Gold accreditation for the work we have done promoting the children’s oral health.
Swimming
As part of our curriculum, the children go swimming for 2 years. We go to Langley Leisure Centre for our lessons. We believe that early water confidence is key to the children learning how to swim, as well as increasing their independence, therefore they attend swimming lessons throughout Year 1. They then attend swimming lessons from February half term in Year 5 until February half term in Year 6.
Bikeability
We also believe that being able to ride a bike is a fundamental life skill. Therefore we offer Bikeability Levels ‘Learn to Ride’, Level 1 (in Year 4) and Level 2 (in Year 6) to train the children not only to ride a bike, but also the importance of the highway code and safely navigating the roads on a bike.
The River and Rowing Museum
We also have a connection to the River and Rowing Museum. Last year, our sports and play leaders interviewed Sir Steve Redgrave and Alan Campbell as part of the new Olympics section of the Museum.
