Reading at TLAP

Reading is at the heart of everything we do at TLAP. Children begin their reading journey in nursery, reading many stories a day and beginning their journey into phonics.

Phonics lessons happen daily to ensure children gain the skills they need. Children will bring phonics resources home so that they can continue to practise reading with their family. These materials include sound cards, green words, ‘ditty’ sheets and storybooks. This allows consolidation and enhances their confidence, which will in turn support fluency, expression and comprehension. This continues throughout EYFS and KS1, as children progress, they begin to develop fluency and comprehension skills until they graduate from the Read Write Inc scheme.

See Read Write Inc page for further information.

Reading Scheme

Once confident, children will bring home books from the Oxford Reading Tree scheme to read to a family member at home. Rooted in reading for pleasure and with systematic phonics at its heart, Oxford Reading Tree's well-loved characters, breadth and varied writing styles give children everything they need to become confident readers.

Wider Reading at TLAP

At TLAP, also offer a variety of exciting opportunities for our children. Throughout the year, we celebrate World Book Day with themed events and activities. We have visiting storytellers to explore different topics including neurodiversity, with sessions that bring stories to life. Our read-a-thon inspires our children to read more, while trips to the Langley Library encourage independent exploration of new genres. Additionally, our book fairs give children and their families the chance to discover and purchase new books, making reading a fun and engaging part of their school experience.
